Freeing Hindu Temples? How easy is it?
#Freehindutemples.
These days, we see many hindus openly supporting this movement and rightly so.
logic being “ why should a govt handle a hindu temple, while places of worship of other religions are not?”
fair argument.
Let's go to the next level of discussion on this.
what if Govt says “ ok, Govt will not handle the hindu temples anymore “.
whats next then?
sadly, many who support the #freetemples campaign havent thought about it.
Take for example: The muzrai run Kateel temple.
Suppose Govt gives away the control- who should take the control then?
The Asrannas? The local business community? Some Mutt?
We cant run away saying- "That will be looked into, later."
Because its a complicated issue and I talked about only one temple.
imagine the confusion, the groupism, the entry of big influential persons, the resulting division among the locals due to the elections for the trustees of one temple( especially if its a rich temple)
Can you as a society handle this in every town?
Think about it.
lets read about a live example from karnataka.
There is a ancient temple of Mahabaleshwar in Gokarna.
Gokarna is mentioned even in the Mahabharata.
In 2003- Karnataka Govt took over it using the Muzrai act.
some people agitated.
but nothing much happened.
in 2008- Yedduruppa gave a notification freeing it from The govt and handing it over to Ramachandrapura Mutt( supposedly the original care takers of the temple).
Good thing isnt it?
Temple freed from Government.
Then things got nasty.
Few people went to the High court ( They were Hindus).
High court over-ruled Yeddys notification and gave it back to Government citing lack of proof etc.
The other side went to supreme-court.
This time the karnataka govt lawyer( a hindu again) argued it to be kept with the Govt.
Petitioners lawyer was also a hindu.
In 2021- Supreme-court gave the order overturning the high court but with a twist. Instead of giving back to Mutt, it gave it under a commitee headed by a ex- judge till the final proof was examined .
So, from 2003 to 2021...18 years...people have been fighting a legal battle and its not resolved yet.
Can you ,as a society do it for each and every temple in each town of this Nation?
Do the hindus have it in them?
you saw how Yedduruppa in 2008 tried to free a temple and the mess that happened.
In 2021 Bommai again promised to free the temples.
The Archaka sangha opposed this move and the issue again went into the backburner.
looking from the political viewpoint : Yeddy tried to free a temple and lost power.
Same happened with Bommai.
if your reasoning would be - “that is just one issue.”
Well, as Hindus, if you are not grateful for that attempt but will vote for freebies and caste- why should a politician risk that move?
For a politician- coming to power is the first step to implement his ideas in the society.
Obviously, the Hindus are not showing enough eagerness on the freetemple issue.
Maybe other issues are more important.
so, the politician will focus on other issues.
btw- karnataka govt has 35500 temples under them. 35350 temples earn less than 5 lacs a year.
if the movement is because those 200 temples are rich, Is there a plan among the hindus to take care of the poor 35300 temples?
if yes- why cant they start supporting it even now?
last part #freehindutemples.
Since its now recognised that freeing a hindu temple from govt control is a complicated affair...what are the probable solutions?
This is a list of some of them. Many more could be added or modified.
1. The first issue is Hindus feeling “ why only ours”?. Secularism in Europe( where it first started) was about seperation between state and religion.
In India however, our concept was treat all religions equally.( The word secular itself was added in the constitution during emergency).
In View of the above, bring all places of worship belongjng to every religion( except the ones under private/community control) under the Government.
2.Make those religious boards more autonomous.
3.let the local communities be part of the temple board.
4.Appoint independent credible auditors to check for corruption etc.
5.The temple board will decide about the disposal of the funds( not the govt)
Add more suggestions.
