Names in Mangalore

As you all have guessed by now, I usually post things on History- which is a surprise to me, because I hated history during the schooldays ( maybe the way it was presented etc). What happens is, when I see something new, I go 'wow' and think- let me share this. Thinking that -maybe like me-others also dont know( which is actually wrong, because there are many, who know it-but probably dont express it).

So, few days back, I saw a post on the historical reasons behind different names of places in mangalore...and I went 'wow'...I am 100% sure-many of you know about this- the following is for the ones who didnt know about this.
Its complied from various posts of some blogs.Remember: this is not the 'exact' reason-but a probable reason.
1. Nandigudde: This is the modified version of earlier 'nanda-gudde'. Coming from the Nanda rulers of Tulu nadu. Earlier people used to always settled on river banks. Nandigudde is located close the former (ancient) course of River Netravati. Ofcourse Netravathi has shifted her course presently.
2.Panambur: it was earlier called Nandaneshwara- The capital of the Nanda rulers. later that place had a dominant population of Panamb ( Pani) tribes- so became panambur.
3.kadri: One inscription at the kadri temple installed by the Alupa king mentions it as Kadiri vihar. The most probable explanation is kadiri-ear or corn of paddy. Even today -the Kadri Jogis( of the jogi mutt near kadri park), who are the administrators of kadri temple ,distribute kadiri during annual harvest festival. Kadiri later got anglecised to Kadri.
4. Baikampadi: In old kannada- Baikam meant 'beggar'- padi means shrubby land in tulu. Those days -it was probably reserved for the beggars or recluse. That word came somewhere between 10th and 13th century. Today Baikampady is the industrial estate area.
5.Hampankatta: Its believed that,it was a place -where a person by name Appanna used to sit on a katte ( a square area under a tree) serving water to travelling people( who probably were going further to bunder area). Appannakatte became hampankatte.
6. Moving away a bit from the topic: One of the names of mangalore is said to be Maikala. This word is very prevalent among the beary community. The word probably came from maya+kala..Maya from mayadevi -mother of Gautama buddha. How did that come here? because the Mahayana school of buddhism ,said to have originated in southern india worshipped idols of Maya devi and buddha...early christian era had major buddhists temples all over india...probably a temple was there somewhere in the old bunder area, where the beary merchant community form kerala used to frequent this port for their business. Its a credit to this community-that this name is still prevalent in their society.mayakala became maikala.
7.Bokkapatna:The port during the vijayanagara empire was bokkapatna and not the present day bunder. 'Bokka' was the name of one of the vijayanagara kings.
8.Kaprigudda: There can be two explantions. One is the modified 'capri' town of italy( we had many italian jesuits preists those days in mangalore.). The other one is named after spirit god 'Kapri'-who was worshiped by the early african settlers in this part of mangalore.
9. Jeppu/jeppinamogaru: Unlike what most think- its not coming from the word 'jeppu( sleep)', but Jappu- indicating the reduced flow of river netravthi near by. Survey map 1894 of british shows two halfs of Jeppu seperated by a river. today that river has shifted course and jeppu has become one area. Mogaru represents a river bank.Jappu became Jeppu.
10.Kulshekhar: That came from the name of one of the Alupa kings -kula shekara. The Early capital of the Alupa kings was Alupe.Later the capital was pandeshawr.
11. Pandeshwara:Big boats those days were called Pandi. A Shiva temple was built by the Boat owners around 4th/5th CE by name pandeshawara and the area later came to be known as Pandeshawara.

Remember- River netravathi was flowing through Attavara and Pandeshwara area till 7th CE...a earthquake or a earth movement must have caused netravathi to change course..there is geological evidence for this event.

12. Its said mangalore is also called manjarun. Ibn batuta( 1343 CE) mentions it in his travelogue. It may have been the corrupt form of the name manjarur. Probably the northern part of mangalore was under Natha sect during 10-14 century CE. Maccendranath is supposed to have consecrated 'manjunatha' at the kadri temple ,. because of Manjunatha-that place was probably called manjarur.
Side note: Natha sect is one of the major sects in india. They have several temples and mutts under their juridiction all over india. Headquarters of this is the Gorakhnath Mutt at Gorkahpur.Present head of Gorakhnath Mutt is the present CM of UP- yogi Adityanath.
13.Maroli:Its named after the ancient marava tribes .Its near to the early capital of Alupe kings- Alupe.
14.Mangalore is also known as kudla: The common reason usually is thought to be a combination of Kudala..kood( joined) + aala( rivers),due to the conjunction of the two rivers. however when you see the earlier river maps-they were divergent just some centuries back. Thats why its said that the reason could be actually "Kudu"-horse gram- the primary agricultural product of the region, those days. Till a century back- Netravathi and Gurupur river used to meet at kudroli and not at bengre and ullal as it now.

Infact in 1887- a major shifting of the rivers happenned..Gurupur which was going to sea at tannerbaavi suddenly turned south 5kms and joined sea. The land reclaimed from that is todays 'Bengre' area .'Bengre ' Area is just a century old.

15.Kankanadi: A village of Kanka tribes.
16.Kulur : A village beside a lake (Kula).
17. Bondel: This name was reported to be chosen by the Catholic missionaries who established the St. Lawrence church at Bondel some hundred years ago. It was originally called as Bon-dale, the beautiful valley ( bon+ dale) that refers to the greenery around there. Bon-dale became bondel.
